The World War II Memorial, dedicated on May 29, 2004, honors the 16 million Americans who served in the armed forces during World War II and the more than 400,000 who gave their lives. Located on the National Mall between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, the memorial features 56 granite pillars representing each U.S. state and territory, two triumphal arches marking the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, and a Field of Stars — 4,048 gold stars, each representing 100 American deaths — surrounding the Freedom Wall at its western end.
