I never thought I’d become obsessed with mahjong…
but here we are. It all started when my besties — Bev, Elyse, and Lilli — decided I needed to learn how to play. “It’ll be fun,” they said. What they forgot to mention was that mahjong comes with approximately 47 million rules. I would proudly slam down my tiles and yell, “I WON!”Only to have one of them calmly inform me that no… apparently I did not win because of some tiny mysterious rule involving dragons, flowers, winds, or the alignment of the moon.
Very humbling.
But once it finally started to click, I was hooked. Mahjong has this magical mix of strategy, chaos, luck, and just enough confusion to keep you completely addicted.Naturally, my designer brain kicked in. First, I created a quilted Mahjong tabletop game mat — perfect for protecting tables from clacking tiles, cards, and enthusiastic players who think they’ve won when they absolutely have NOT. It’s practical, pretty, and works beautifully for all kinds of games.
Then things escalated. I started designing Mahjong-themed fabric. And honestly? It has become one of the most fun collections I’ve ever created. Apparently I’m not the only one obsessed because the Mahjong fabrics quickly became one of our best-selling themes in our Spoonflower fabric shop.
This newest two sets — finished just this morning — are officially joining my growing Mahjong menagerie. Click on link and see my fabric shop!
I guess this is what happens when you get older… you trade wild nights out for tiny tiles, fabric design, drinking wine, eating desserts and arguing over rules with your friends for three hours straight. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
